How to Fix Uneven Blinds

Posted on 23rd July 2024 by Gemini Blinds

Blinds are an invaluable tool for controlling the levels of light and glare, providing privacy and ensuring a good night’s sleep. However, given how many times you open and close your blinds a day, it’s only natural that you might notice certain problems developing over time.

One issue that seems minor at first but can have a big impact later is uneven blinds; even the smallest misalignment can disrupt your sleep and affect the functionality of your blinds. But how do you fix uneven blinds? The team at Gemini Blinds is here to talk you through the process.

Identify the problem

Uneven blinds can be caused by a range of things, so you should first identify the root of the problem.

Take a closer look at your blinds; you may need to remove them from the bracket to do this thoroughly. Are the slats tilted at an uneven angle or does the problem lie with the blind cords? This will determine just how you fix the issue.

Loosen any knots

If the misalignment is being caused by a problem with the blind cords, check them for any tangles – even the smallest knot can prevent your blinds from functioning properly. If you find any, gently loosen them by starting at the bottom of the tangled section and working your way up.

Examine the blind cords

You should also try raising and lowering the blinds a few times; it may be that the strings are uneven and this can help to re-tension them. If re-tensioning doesn’t solve the issue, you may need to tighten or loosen the blind cord mechanism near the top and adjust the tension. The right way to do this varies depending on the style of the blind, so consult the manufacturer’s recommendations before you attempt this.

If you find that your blind cords are damaged, you’ll need to order a replacement and then restring them – this may need the help of a professional.

Assess the brackets

The issue may not lie with the blind itself but with the bracket holding it in place. Perhaps this has loosened or become damaged and this is what’s causing the problem, so check the alignment with a spirit level and adjust accordingly. Ensure that the bracket is securely fastened and check for any loose screws, using a screwdriver to tighten any that you find.

Examine the condition of the slats

Have your blind slats become warped or bent? Is this misalignment caused by issues with the slats themselves? If this damage is severe, then this may mean you need to replace the entire blind.

How to fix uneven cordless blinds

Fixing uneven cordless blinds is an easy enough process and doesn’t even require the use of any tools. Simply hold on to the middle of the blind and gently pull it all the way down; as this is now fully extended, this should mean that the bottom of the blind is even. Now raise it back up, adjusting each side and repeating as necessary until it’s even.

Should you fix your blinds?

Before you begin any repairs, it’s also important to consider the condition and age of your blinds – are they actually worth saving? If the damage is minor or easily fixed, then it’s best to give repairing your blinds a go. However, if your blinds are dated or worn, it may be more cost-effective to simply order a replacement to ensure longevity and save the time, money and effort you’d have otherwise spent on fixing the problem.
